Campaign Story

The project works with orphans and vulnerable children in the Bulawayo and Matabeleland Provinces of Zimbabwe to tackle problems surrounding lack of formal identity registration. Almost one third of Zimbabwean children do not possess a birth certificate. This creates a barrier which prevents children exercising many of their basic human rights, and stops them from enrolling in school and sitting for formal examinations.

In association with Trinity Project, a project delivery partner, the project provides free legal services and raises awareness of the socio-cultural issues surrounding the lack of birth registration for orphans and vulnerable children. Through this process, thousands of children will be assisted to register, enroll in primary education, and access inheritance and government support which will allow them to finance their education and bring them out of poverty.

The project works very closely with a number of local organisations, such as Child Protection Committees, schools, churches, and relevant government departments. As such, ZET is building the capacity of other organisations to deal with these. In addition, by raising awareness in schools, and by allowing children to participate actively in the project, the issue of lack of birth registration should not become a problem for future generations.
